POPULAR RESISTANCEParliamentary elections were held in March 1943, in which 95% of voters supported the political parties who were for collaboration. Shortly after the election, public opinion began to change. In line with reports of German defeats, popular resistance to the occupiers started to appear.
To try to curb the rise in resistance, the Germans demanded the Danish government declared martial law and introduced the death penalty for sabotage.
This was something the Danish government could not accept, resulting in the German authorities declaring martial law themselves, and the Danish government ceased to function on 29 August 1943. |
